Build your own robot kit
Thank you for purchasing our “Build your own robot kit”! We hope you will have a great time making it, but here are a few extra pointers if you need them.
Please read before you start!
Thank you for supporting our small business! We want you to have great fun, but we never want anyone to get hurt, so please supervise your child at all times with this robot- there are sharp and small pieces!
The important stuff
In my experience running kid’s workshops, a child’s imagination and creativity is incredible, but very often we as grownups tend to make them think that things “should” be a certain way. Please try and take a step back in the design process, and let the children lead- then try to help them with their vision if they need help. (Who says how many eyes/ears/noses they have anyway!?)
Where to start
The first thing I like to do is get the children to start thinking about a design. I find that showing them all of the available materials can help spark ideas, or a name can even start ideas too. If you need to, you can show them my sample robot online for “eye” or “ear” ideas, but they might be fine on their own. After this take some time to draw on the things you intend to do on your template sheet. This gives a real sense of achievement when they can see what they designed becoming a real thing that they created.
The two longer dowels are for the legs and shorter dowel is for the head. These may need tapped in gently with a small hammer and can be glued (just PVA), but this is not necessary. The two long screws are for attaching the arms.
Tips
We put a nail into your pack, this is to use as an Awl- you can start a hole in your piece, and this makes putting the screw in so much easier! It’s especially handy for putting the arms on, just push it through the arm to mark the hole for the screw to attach it.
Make it smooth, or shape pieces with the provided sandpaper, always start with the lowest number first (80), then move to the higher number (180)
Think outside the box, you can paint, glitter or stick on anything you have lying around! A hot glue gun helps here- but please supervise
Take your time- there is no rush- enjoy it
